Round 12, 2026 Kalamunda V’s Cockburn Lakes

Round 12, Kalamunda V’s Cockburn Lakes @ Harmony Field

The Cougars will remember round 3, at Anning Park, where in the third quarter the Cougars lost concentration and allowed the Warriors to kick 5 goals by allowing their opponents to run free. In the last quarter the Cougars kept their best for last and kicked 4 goals to the Warriors 2, however it was too little too late and they lost by 7 points representing the need to play four quarters of ‘concentrated’ football,

Cockburn Lakes are currently sitting in 4th position on the B grade ladder and would have been in the Cougars sights after a disappointing loss to Swan Athletic last round.

The first quarter in this game highlighted the need for a big strong full forward as the Cougars had 70% of the play in that area and only managed to kick 1.5 while restricting the Warriors to 1.3

Daniel Griffin was winning in the ruck and providing plenty of opportunities for Tiger Morris, Steve Caccetta and Trent Pottinger to move the ball forward, however the Warriors managed to crowd the scoring area with their taller players forcing the Cougars to scramble around and kick 5 points, Ash McGowan kicked the only goal.

In the second term, Tiger Morris had a dream run and opened the scoring, then followed up with a beautiful pass that Tyler Mouritz marked and goaled. Michael DeGasperis who was prominent then kicked another before the Warriors got into stride and Kicked 4 straight goals to lead by 2 points at the main break.

During the second quarter the Cougars relapsed into their old habit of playing the clubroom flank allowing the Warriors to camp their big men across the half back line and repulse any forward moves by the Cougars.

In the third quarter with Daniel Griffin winning in the ruck, the Cougars steadied and improved their disposal allowing Ben de Guzman, Tyler Moutitz and Michael De Gasperis to find space and score, opening-up a 10 point lead at the end of the term.

Jack Jago scored early in the final quarter, then the rot set in with the Cougars reverting to flank play and failing to man-up as the Warriors started to press allowing their tall forwards taking telling marks.

The Cougars tried desperately to stay in front of the Warriors, however every entry into their forward line was countered quickly and transferred smartly up field to their forwards, leaving the Cougars short by two miserable points!

This was one of the most disappointing games I have reported on.

The Cougars must now reappraise where they are heading. There is no doubt they have the talent to play at a higher level; however, one must question the level of concentration and communication the players display. The commitment is there, perhaps a big body to help Tyler Mouritz in the forward line would help!

 Final scores: Cockburn Lakes 10.9 – 69, Kalamunda 9.13 – 67

Goals: Tyler Mouritz 4, Michael De Gasperis 2, one each to Jack Jago, Ben de Guzman and Ashton McGowan
